Polish officials allege potential Russian hack of Polish government websites
On March 17, 2021, Polish authorities alleged that a potential Russian state-backed hacking attempt had targeted two Polish government agency websites and used them to disseminate false information about a non-existent nuclear waste spill in Lithuania endangering Polish citizens situated along the border. Poland’s National Atomic Energy Agency and Health Ministry websites briefly displayed information about the fake event. Additionally, the Twitter account of a journalist covering Russian and Eastern European affairs was hijacked to spread the story further online. Polish officials alleged that the operation was similar to previous Russian attempts to undermine its European alliances.
