Russian Agent Andrii Derkach and Associates Sanctioned for Covert Influence Campaign Targeting 2020 U.S. Election
From mid-2019 to 2020, Andrii Derkach, a member of the Ukrainian parliament who is according to the U.S. Treasury also an agent of Russian intelligence, waged a covert influence campaign to encourage bogus corruption investigations against U.S. political figures, mainly relatives of then-Democratic Party presidential candidate Joe Biden, designed to culminate around the time of the U.S. 2020 election. Derkach, conspiring with domestic actors such as former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani, rendered further assistance of value to then-President Donald Trump’s campaign by releasing doctored audio tapes and other false information designed to harm U.S. elected officials. Former Ukrainian government officials Konstantin Kulyk, Oleksandr Onyshchenko, and Andriy Telizhenko also took part in Derkatch’s scheme and have been sanctioned by the United States.
