Russia’s GRU-connected Fancy Bear hacks Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU)
In April 2016, approximately a year after hacking the German Parliament, Russian military intelligence agency (GRU)-connected hacker group Fancy Bear, or APT28, conducted a cyber-operation against Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the largest party in Parliament. According to Trend Micro, Fancy Bear’s attack mainly consisted of coordinated credential phishing in an attempt to gain access to sensitive computer systems and email accounts. According to Germany’s domestic intelligence agency (BfV), the attempts were detected early by a cybersecurity firm and by BfV, so they were unsuccessful.
