Suspected Russian hackers target German political parties
On August 15 and 24, 2016, hackers targeted Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SDP), Die Linke, and Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with phishing attacks. The perpetrators, who imitated NATO officials, were reportedly unsuccessful. The German cyber-security agency BSI indicated that Russian military intelligence agency (GRU)-connected hacking group Fancy Bear, or APT28, was responsible for the attack.
