CEFC donates to UN General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic, Jeremic spreads CEFC influence

Vuk Jeremic was the Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs until he became a president of the U.N. General Assembly in 2012. CEFC China Energy, a company with links to the United Front, allegedly donated to Jeremic and two other U.N. General Assembly presidents. CEFC helped Jeremic increase his influence, benefiting both parties as Jeremic used this influence to help CEFC establish contacts and make deals. CEFC also arranged speeches and meetings with world leaders, often including both Jeremic and Patrick Ho, a Chinese politician arrested for bribery in November 2017. Having influence inside the U.N. allows Beijing to push for human rights norms which reflect Communist Party values and frame its government’s actions in a better light. China uses “United Front” work to co-opt and neutralize sources of potential opposition to the policies and authority of its ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The CCP’s United Front Work Department (UFWD)—the agency responsible for coordinating these kinds of influence operations—mostly focuses on the management of potential opposition groups inside China, but it also has an important foreign influence mission.
