European Commission imposes obligations on Russian state-controlled Gazprom in response to breaches of antitrust rules in eight member states
On May 24, 2018, the European Commission imposed obligations on Russian state-controlled energy giant Gazprom for violations of antitrust laws. The Commission found that Gazprom attempted to partition gas markets along national borders in eight different EU member states, including Lithuania. The legally-binding obligations sought to ensure that gas prices remained competitive throughout the European Union in order to prevent Gazprom from leveraging its dominance in the European energy market.
