Alliance for Securing Democracy Director and GMF Senior Fellow Laura Rosenberger Selected for National Security Council Staff
Washington, D.C. (January 15, 2021)—The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) congratulates Laura Rosenberger, Senior Fellow and Director of the Alliance for Securing Democracy (ASD), on her selection by President-elect Biden as Senior Director for China at the National Security Council.
GMF President Karen Donfried said: “Laura, as founding director of the Alliance for Securing Democracy, built an innovative program from the ground up with vision and skill. We are extremely proud of the impact that ASD has had under Laura’s leadership. We wish her the very best as she takes on this critical role at the NSC.”
GMF remains committed to the work of ASD, which develops comprehensive strategies to deter, defend against, and raise the costs on autocratic efforts to undermine and interfere in democratic institutions. Since its inception in 2017, ASD’s work has shed light on the critical challenges posed by foreign interference in democracy.
ASD’s signal accomplishments include:
- Developing the Hamilton dashboard, a unique public tool to track official messaging from Russia, China, and Iran on Twitter, YouTube, state-sponsored news websites, and UN statements. The dashboard allows for an increased understanding of the focus and spread of state-backed government messaging across various information mediums.
- Presenting a national strategy for the United States to offset autocratic advances in non-military domains of competition, using input from a task force of 30 leading American national security experts from both sides of the aisle.
- Engaging the public and policymakers in discussions of disinformation and foreign interference in advance of the 2020 U.S. election cycle at numerous events in Washington, DC, Brussels, and across the United States. ASD also conducted a simulation exercise to ensure American readiness to counter foreign efforts to disrupt the 2020 election.
