Russian state-sponsored media spreads disinformation to attack Polish counterintelligence
On November 17, 2017, Stopfake.org tracked disinformation from Russian state-sponsored outlets Sputnik and Sputnik Radio, as well as from pro-Russian blogs, that attacked Poland’s counterintelligence community for expelling a suspected spy. The outlets reportedly ran stories following the arrest of suspected spy Dmitry Karnaukhov’s to “reinforce the pro-Kremlin line that fighting Russian hybrid warfare is a fight against democracy.” Polish authorities charged Karnaukhov, a Russian citizen, with spying and expelled him from Poland on October 13, 2017. Polish intelligence service ABW described Karnaukhov’s activity as “offering Moscow-financed grants, trips, and publications to recruit people with pro-Russian views.”
