In March 2019, a major Italian broadcasting company, Radiotelevisione Italia (RAI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Media Group. China Media Group is a state-owned company which incorporates China National Radio and China Radio International. In March 2020, RAI coverage of coronavirus and Chinese aid supported Chinese efforts to portray the Chinese authorities as Italy’s main ally in the fight against the virus. RAI coverage of Chinese aid was disproportionate to the coverage of aid from other countries. According to a DataStampa study, Chinese aid was given more than three times as much coverage as that given to U.S. aid and two and a half times as much as coverage as that given to Russian aid.
