In April 2022, the regional parliament of German regional state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern launched a parliamentary inquiry into the “Climate and Environment Protection Foundation MV”. The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern had backed the foundation’s creation in January 2021, ostensibly to promote climate protection, nature preservation and the role of renewables and gas as bridge technologies. However, the foundation also aimed to ensure the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, potentially circumventing US sanctions. The foundation was mostly funded by the Nord-Stream 2 AG, a Swiss company itself fully funded by Gazprom. Nord Stream 2 AG also participated in the drafting of the foundation’s charter. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s leadership denounced the foundation in 2022 but, as of fall 2024, legal obstacles were still preventing authorities from shutting it down.
