Facebook Removes Russian Propaganda Network ‘Based in Romania’

In September 2020, Facebook removed several accounts based in Romania that were run by people associated with the Russian government. The network was connected to the IRA gravitating around the news website Peacedata.net and targeted “left-leaning communities” posting stories about social and racial justice issues in the US and UK, NATO and EU politics, alleging Western war crimes, corruption and environmental issues. Facebook identified 13 accounts and two Facebook pages with a following of 14,000 that made up the network stating that it was in the “early stage” of building a wider audience. The campaign largely targeted audiences in the US, UK, Algeria and Egypt, in addition to other English-speaking countries and countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
