Assistant to Member of European Parliament arrested for espionage on behalf of PRC

On April 23, 2024, German authorities arrested Jian G., the parliamentary aide to Maximilian Krah, a Member of the European Parliament for Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), for “alleged intelligence activity”. Jian is accused of repeatedly forwarding internal information from the European Parliament to the Chinese secret service and of spying on Chinese dissidents living in Germany. He was one of the first assistants employed by Krah when he entered the European Parliament in July 2019. Reports concerning Jian started appearing in 2023, when German outlet t-online shared another AfD MEP’s doubts about the sincerity of the aide’s commitment to the parties’ parliamentary work. Krah, the party’s top candidate in the 2024 European parliament elections, said that he did not have any knowledge about the activities of his assistant, but that he would terminate the employment if allegations proved to be true. The European Parliament suspended Jian G. immediately due to the severity of the allegations.
