We are witnessing an unprecedented attack on our democracy, fueled by baseless allegations that the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump. Such claims inspired the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and spawned a sort of dual reality in which Americans view their democracy very differently depending on their party. Meanwhile, many Republican state legislators are pursuing restrictive election laws throughout the country.
It was infuriating to watch the recent Senate GOP filibuster of voting rights legislation named in honor of the late Rep. John Lewis, which would have enshrined protections for the right to vote and established safeguards to help ward off subversion of the electoral process.
