Uyghur Dutch woman harassed after revealing details of Chinese camps

After leaking Chinese government documents exposing human rights abuses in Xinjiang in June 2019, Asiye Abdulaheb, an Uyghur woman living in the Netherlands, started receiving death threats. According to Dutch media, the documents’ release coincided with the hacking of her email account, threatening messages on social media, and harassment of her acquaintances. In particular, her ex-husband claims to have been lured to Dubai where a Chinese man saying he worked for state intelligence told him to hack into his ex-wife’s computer, showing him videos of his mother being questioned by Chinese authorities. While reporters were unable to independently verify the ex-husband’s claims, his and Ms. Abdulaheb’s accounts are consistent with Chinese authorities’ harassment of Uyghurs in other European countries.
