UK professor testifies to Parliament on pressuring of university academics by Chinese state officials
Professor Stephen Tsang, of SOAS University London, testified in a report commissioned by Parliament that he knew of an instance where a university pro-vice chancellor “was spoken to by someone in the Chinese embassy and as a result he stood a speaker who was already invited down”, and that he was also aware of “a vice-chancellor again under pressure from the Chinese embassy asking one of his senior academics not to make political comments on China at a specified period of time”. Tsang’s testimony, which does not specify the names of the universities nor of those involved, comes amidst increased government concern about Chinese Communist Party interference in British academia. The Parliamentary report states that the Foreign Affairs committee heard “alarming evidence” about the degree of CCP interference in UK universities.
