Russia launches bogus criminal proceedings in Moscow after Czech authorities remove a statue of World War II-era Soviet general in Prague.

In April 2020, the Russian Investigative Committee in Moscow opened legal proceedings against Czech authorities after a statue of Ivan Konev, the Soviet general who defeated the German occupation of Prague, was removed from public display in the city. Russia’s narrative around the statue, which was widely reviled by city residents as a reminder of the later Soviet occupation and Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, is consistent with its attempts to whitewash the Soviet Union’s activities in Eastern Europe between the end of World War II and the fall of Communism. Russian law has no jurisdiction in the Czech Republic and the Investigative Committee’s charges of desecration of war memorials is meaningless outside Russian territory. Ondřej Kolář, the mayor of Prague, was put under police protection after threats of poisoning against him were detected by Czech security services.
