Russia-based cybercriminals have targeted more than 400 U.S. hospitals in cyber operations

Cybercriminals based in Moscow and St. Petersburg are responsible for launching cyberattacks on nearly 400 U.S. hospitals, and as of October 2020, about 30 hospitals were successfully infected. Cybersecurity professionals speculate that the attacks are retribution for Microsoft’s TrickBot takedown over the summer, which took offline more than 90% of TrickBot servers. Hackers had previously agreed not to target hospitals due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In some ransomware attacks, hackers held hospital administrators hostage for $5 million in cryptocurrency.
